The 102-Day-Old Defendant

A 102-day-old baby is sued for $480,000—accused of giving a fourteen-year-old girl a comminuted fracture. The whole neighborhood turns on his mother, Emilia. Her husband begs her to apologize and pay. Neighbors avoid her. Even her mother-in-law blames her. Everyone believes the accusation, but no one asks the obvious question: How could a baby who can’t even sit up attack a teenage girl? Emilia doesn’t argue. She doesn’t settle. She simply accepts the summons. The day before court, the plaintiff’s lawyer calls to negotiate. Emilia gives him one warning: “Meet my son first.” The next day, the courtroom is packed. When the judge calls for the defendant, Emilia slowly unclips the baby carrier—and lifts her sleeping son into everyone’s view. The courtroom falls dead silent.
